The Course
You’ve probably passed Poxabogue Golf Center if you’ve ever sat through the dreadful stretch of one-lane traffic that connects East Hampton and Montauk with the rest of New York State.
This unassuming driving range / pitch and putt facility is owned by the neighboring towns and it’s truly nothing more or less than a public muni 9 hole course.
Playing at 1500 yards, the par 30 layout might ask for 4-5 clubs in your bag throughout. Most holes are more or less on top of one another, and you’ll frequently be asking what those people are doing on your fairway before you realize their tee box is right there.
There are some questions asked by Poxabogue for the more serious golfer - hybrid or iron, safe or dead, attack the trap or play safe. Even with momentary bunker situations and pin placements that might tickle you, this course is less about what you shoot, and more about getting to hit the golf ball around at all.
If you know what to expect, Poxabogue can be a fun hour with your significant other or kids to walk around, have a beer, learn the game, and/or sweat out a Talkhouse shift.
The Price
I don’t want to do this to them, but this course is laughably overpriced if you go at the wrong time.
Most of us are not residents of East Hampton or Southampton, so non-resident rates are $33 for a weekday nine, or $45 (LMAO) on weekends.
Please don’t pay $45 for a nine holes of golf here. I’m really sad to say it because the people in there don’t necessarily seem like bad actors, but it’s pretty despicable to be asking for that much when you see what the course looks like.
Yes, it’s a respite for golfers with an itch and no country club membership. It’s also fun, quirky, and somewhere to play in an area where there’s nowhere to play. But please, go after 4pm on weekdays and pay $28 because that’s what it is worth.
Signature Hole
The third hole is a slight dog leg left playing about 290 with an elevated green that has a pretty drastic front to back slope. It’s a real golf hole and offers a fun risk/reward (don’t go right, every other golfer on the property will be in danger).
Hole 2 (sorry, I took this from a Facebook photo dated in 2013)
Grabbing a Bite
The facility operates its own diner called ‘The Fairway Restaurant’ that, hand up, I’ve never eaten at. But, there are always people in there and the pancakes look good, so, you never know.
Nice to Know
This is one of the only driving ranges on the entire island. They have approximately 700,000 bays and affordable golf balls.
Little secret, but if you walk all the way down to the end, there are about 7 stalls with grass instead of mats that they label ‘for experienced golfers only,’ which doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t be bad, just experienced.
How many sleeves: 1
You can realistically loop here with one golf ball as long as you’re not afraid to walk onto another group’s green and apologize.
