Let’s Review: Red Tail Golf Club
Devens, Massachusetts
The Skinny
Red Tail Golf Club is Northeast golf at its best. Visually stunning, deceivingly scorable, and full of amenities for a price point that won’t devastate you - this course drops you in the middle of nowhere and you will not want to leave.

Hole #16 and #17
The Course
Red Tail can appear harder than it plays thanks to tee box visuals that will convince you that the only club you could land in the fairway is a pitching wedge. Trust yourself as these holes play wider than you’d think. If you don’t believe me, take a low iron off the tee; you’ll still only have a mid-iron or wedge in on most of the par 4s.
The worst thing a course can do is throw dogleg after dogleg at you and pretend that it has character. Red Tail uses doglegs in addition to elevation changes, trees, and bunkers to give you what feels like eighteen unique golf holes. This course gets its length from the par 5s, its challenges from the par 3s, and its scorability from the par 4s.
While you are going to be gutted that your round is coming to an end, take a moment to appreciate the 18th hole. 555 yard par 5 in which water protects the entire right side of the green. It is unfortunately almost guaranteed to be a layup, but fret not - you can still give yourself the rush of a 200 yard shot over water when your layup attempt goes sideways!
For those lucky enough to have played Pound Ridge, think of this as a cheaper, less penal, almost comparable quality of golf experience.
The Price
For the experience, the price is reasonable albeit will sting a little if you are playing at the most peak times. $160 for a Saturday morning, but will get as low as $85-105 if you are willing to tee off a little later in the afternoon
Signature Hole
Can I give it to all four of the par 3s? Across all four, you’ll need both your fade (don’t have) and your draw (don’t have) across uphill and downhill holes. They complement each other perfectly and are all visually stunning.
Grabbing a Bite
For a course that delivers in almost every category, the restaurant is no different. Fun menu that ranges from your typical hot dogs and buffalo chicken wraps to a more exciting Korean BBQ sandwich. Our group enjoyed everything we ate.
Nice to Know
Range balls come included with your tee time and there is supposedly a grass range, although both times I have played (granted not in peak season), I have been relegated to the mats. Fully loaded carts and a chipping and putting green near the first tee will have you ready to go.
Also, a fantastic pro shop that deserves a little more than a courteous lap. Excellent merch opportunities for what will be your new favorite Boston-adjacent course.
How many sleeves:
1, maaaybe 2 depending on how you are feeling off the tee. If you can limit your mistakes, the most trouble is on the par 3 tee shots and the water on 18.
